Clients say “UAE court” as if it were one building. It is not. Onshore Dubai, onshore Abu Dhabi, DIFC, ADGM, and arbitration seats are different procedures, different languages of practice, and different enforcement stories.
Start with the contract
If the contract chooses a court or an arbitration seat, that is the beginning of the analysis — not the end. Exclusive jurisdiction clauses, pathological arbitration clauses, and “UAE law, English courts” hybrids all appear in real files.
Then look at the defendant
A judgment you cannot serve or enforce is a trophy. Where the company is licensed, where the person lives, and where the assets sit will often matter more than where you find it convenient to instruct lawyers.
DIFC and ADGM are not a lifestyle brand
They are specialist courts. They are the right room for some commercial disputes and the wrong room for others. Wanting a common-law feel is not a jurisdictional gateway.
Criminal and family files are different maps
A bounced-cheque narrative, a police complaint, or a custody application is not a commercial jurisdiction puzzle. Use the criminal or family pages, and instruct accordingly.
